International Roundtables of the RWI-70
The aims of the Raoul Wallenberg International Roundtables are
- to discuss specific background aspects of the Raoul Wallenberg case, as they relate to the question of his fate
- to explore all means of seeking access to relevant historical documents in Russian archives, including legal means
- to discuss the obstacles currently standing in the way of obtaining access to Russian archive collections, including Russian secrecy and privacy laws
- to discuss and test international legal principles, like the Rights of the Disappeared and the Rights of Victims of Repression and their Families to the Truth (as anchored in the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Disappeared); as part of this discussion we intend to highlight the real life challenges prisoners/the disappeared and their families face when seeking enforcement of these rights
- to show that the problem of proper access to historical records exists not only in Russia but other countries as well, including Sweden, Hungary, the U.S. and Britain
- to lift the Raoul Wallenberg case out of its historic isolation and to place it in a broader context, including the present day human rights agenda in Russia
- to bridge the gap between pure academic research and human rights advocacy
- to honor the work of Professor Guy von Dardel, Raoul Wallenberg’s brother, who for more than six decades – together with his parents, Maj and Fredrik von Dardel, as well as his sister Nina Lagergren – led the campaign to determine his brother’s fate.
